London Indian Wedding Photographer – Sikh Maiyan Ceremony

Featured Wedding, Wedding Stories

Indian Wedding Photographer in Croydon, London

How I came to be Inderdeep’s London Indian wedding photographer for his Sikh Maiyan Celebrations is slightly unusual.  I had a number of years before documented his sister’s baby shower celebrations, so his mother reached out to me to see if I was available for his actual Indian wedding ceremony.  I was and she went ahead and booked me but unbeknown to her, the father of the bride had also booked another wedding photographer.

Littleton House Wedding Photography – Chloe & Dan – Back in the Day

Back in the Day

Another year, another 1st wedding anniversary.  Yes, today a year ago I was shooting Chloe and Dan’s wedding at Littleton House at Shepperton Studios in Surrey.

Having been up in Northamptonshire the day before, to shoot Amy and Mark’s wedding, it was down to a Surrey wedding venue much closer to home for Chloe and Dan’s big day.  As a couple they had been really keen on my storytelling documentary approach to their wedding story, so again it was a wedding I was massively looking forward to.

A Unique Surrey Wedding Venue

Littleton House is a unique manor house wedding venue that, rather unusually, sits within the famous Shepperton film studios in Surrey.  This alone makes it one of the most interesting wedding venues in Surrey.  It’s not many brides who can say they got married where parts of films – such as Harry Potter, Love Actually, Bridget Jones’ Diary, The Princess Bride and the Da Vinci Code – were shot!

So Chloe and Dan were definitely in esteemed company as they celebrated their wedding with friends and family in such famous surroundings.  I must confess that I didn’t realise at the time that I took Chloe and Dan down to the small woods and lake it was one of the creepier settings in a Harry Potter film. Thankfully, there were no fantastic beasts to deal with on the day.

Gremlins & The Damage Done

However, it was a wedding where I certainly suffered some damage – a camera viewfinder getting smashed, and a lens getting chipped – so maybe there were some nasty gremlins about…for the wedding photographer at least!

None of which was the couple’s fault and it would be fair to say it was definitely a fantastic and memorable wedding…for all the right reasons.  So I’m delighted to wish Chloe and Dan a very happy first anniversary!

You can see more their Littleton House Wedding Photography on their wedding story portfolio.

Gatton Hall Surrey Wedding Photography – Claire and Nick

Wedding Stories

I first met Claire and Nick in a coffee shop at Clapham Junction railway station in South West London.  One of the first things they said to me was, “we hate posing for photos, we always end up looking like idiots.” For such a handsome couple this was an amusing thing to hear, but as a natural storytelling wedding photographer who prefers to capture real moments – rather than over pose or set up wedding photos – it was music to my ears.

The couple were getting married at Gatton Hall near Mertsham in Surrey, but the morning started off at Claire’s parents home near Leatherhead in Surrey, for the usual bridal preparations.  As always there was plenty of excitement as the girls got ready and as Claire is a producer with a well known TV property show she was able to call in colleagues to film the day too.

I was also impressed to discover that Claire’s dad was also a former professional football player for Exeter City – and his finest moment coming when he played against Liverpool in the FA Cup and had to mark a certain Kenny Dalglish.  It never fails to amaze me the people I meet through being a wedding photographer!

The wedding ceremony actually took place at St Andrew’s Church near Gatton Hall. This is a somewhat small and unusual church, with the congregation seated side on facing the aisle – but it was definitely extremely pretty and full of character.  Nick was already there and admittedly looking very nervous – as most grooms do ahead of the wedding ceremony.

Wedding reportage photography of the bride coming down the aisle at St Andrew, Merstham in Surrey. Taken by one of London's best documentary wedding photographers, Darren Lehane.

Once the ceremony was over it was off to the nearby Gatton Hall, which is a stunning mansion house situated in the grounds of Gatton Park and the Royal Alexandra and Albert School. The views of the surrounding countryside and Surrey Downs are breathtaking. In fact the gardens themselves were designed by the 18th century landscape architect Capability Brown – often referred to as England’s greatest ever gardener.

The speeches were particularly emotional, as Nick and his brother/best man paid tribute to their mother who had sadly passed away many years before. It was clear that there was a special bond between Nick ad his brother – who had travelled with his family all the way from Australia.

A beautiful summer’s evening ensured guests could spend time out in the gardens, enjoying the views until the evening before the band struck up for the evening and the dancing could start in earnest.

Claire and Nick’s wedding was most certainly an enjoyable one from start to finish, and I’m sure you’ll agree from the following small selection of photos from the day they looked great too!

Kingston Old Court House Wedding Photography – Michelle and Sally

Wedding Stories

Michelle and Sally’s same sex wedding was a fun and delightful mix of home comforts in New Malden and a historic wedding venue in Kingston, Surrey.

I arrived at their home in New Malden in the morning to find Sally preparing flowers, whilst workman were putting the finishing touches to a small marquee in their back garden, which would host the wedding reception later in day.  Michelle, who is South African, also had family from South Africa staying with them – so there was a definite busy and cosmopolitan air to the morning preparations.

Both the brides-to-be seemed remarkably relaxed ahead of their, even with more and more family and friends arriving at their New Malden home.  It was already clear that the wedding was going to be a fairly relaxed and informal affair.

The wedding ceremony itself took place at the delightful Old Court House which is part of the Guildhall in Kingston. With its wood paneling and high benches it definitely made for a grand wedding setting.  It’s no surprise its one of the best wedding venues in Surrey.

After the ceremony it was up to Richmond Park for a quick sprint through some more formal posed portraits and group shots. Although I am a documentary wedding photographer, who specialises in real moments and genuine emotions, I still understand that most couples will also want some traditional portraits shooting, so I’m always happy to oblige.

It was then back to their home in New Malden for what our American friends would call a backyard wedding reception – with the house and small marquee in the garden providing the setting for the post-wedding celebrations.

With catering firm Rhubarb providing tasty food and spectacular service, the wedding reception was a really intimate and relaxed affair.  The weather also played its part with some glorious late afternoon sun bathing the marquee in glorious light.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable wedding to be a part of and I’m sure you’ll agree from the small section of wedding photos that follow , it truly was a memorable same sex wedding in Surrey.

Why I Love This Image: The Playful Wedding Guests

Blog Article, Why I Love This Image

When you look at this wedding photography from Chloe & Dan’s wedding at Littleton House in Shepperton, Surrey, what do you see?  Two wedding guests larking about? The father of the groom larking about with a bald man?  Two older men who should know better? Well, when I look at this I see a lifetime connection of friendship.

The man with the napkin on his head is the lifelong friend of the other man, who just happens to be the bride’s father. Napkin man also the best man at his friend’s wedding decades before. And here they are playing around joyfully at a wedding many many years later.

And for me, this is what weddings are all about – a celebration of love, friendships and lifetime connections. It’s why I love applying a candid storytelling approach as a wedding photography. To be unobtrusive and naturally observe these moments is what makes each and every wedding story unique to the couple, family and friends involved. Weddings create memories to be cherished and friendships that last a lifetime. It’s a huge honour and privilege, as a wedding photographer, to be part of it all.

That’s why I love this image of a fun and relaxed moment. It’s real, it’s genuine and it’s an ongoing moment that started generations ago on a school playground and is literally being replicated again now at the daughter’s wedding.

I hope you love this image as much as I do. It would be super helpful and lovely if you could like share it across your social media.

Littleton House Wedding Photography – Shepperton Studios, Surrey

Wedding Stories

When Chloe and Dan told me they were getting married at a film studio I thought they were joking. I mean it’s only celebs and Hollywood A listers who would be so extravagant, surely?  But Littleton House is a Surrey wedding venue that is set within the Shepperton Studios, itself part of the renowned Pinewood film studios.

A 17th century manor house set within the hangers of a film studio is certainly one of the more unique and unusual wedding venues I have ever had the pleasure to shoot at…but it’s that uniqueness that makes it one of the best Surrey wedding venues.

Ashford Bridal Preparations

Littleton House Surrey Wedding Photography

As usual I turned up at Dan and Chloe’s home in Ashford, Surrey a couple of hours before the wedding ceremony at Littleton House, in order to document the bridal preparations. It would be fair to say it was one of the more relaxed bridal preparations I’ve captured, with plenty of smiles and laughs – although there were a few tears that flowed once Chloe got into her beautiful wedding dress.

A Different Perspective

Littleton House Surrey Wedding Photography

It was then just a short drive over to Shepperton, for the main part of the wedding day at Littleton House, where Dan and his groomsmen had already arrived. One of the great things about the venue is the chance to shoot down from an upper floor, directly above where the wedding ceremony takes place – and of course as wedding photographer I took full advantage of that.

A Walk Through The Woods

Littleton House Surrey Wedding Photography

Another lovely thing about Littleton House for wedding photography is the opportunity to take some portraits in a small woods, beside a stream, just at the back of the studios. This was perfect to get some more formal portraits of the happy couple, before returning back to the main house for the meal, speeches and evening wedding reception.

A Unique Surrey Wedding Venue

Littleton House Surrey Wedding Photography

As a wedding photojournalist a wedding a Littleton House provides so many opprtunities to capture all the natural emotions and genuine moments that make up the wedding story, against such a fantastic and unique Surrey wedding venue.

Wedding Fun & The Damage Done

And, despite the fact I managed to smash the electronic viewfinder on one of my Olympus OMD EM5 camera bodies and chipped the glass of my Olympus Pro 7-14mm zoom lens during the day, it was a fanastic day at such a great wedding venue in Surrey.

I hope you enjoy a small selection of the wedding photography from their day and please do feel free to share across social media.

The bride comforts her bride during a same sex wedding

Woodlands Park Hotel Wedding – Elaine & Marisa

Wedding Stories

I was really looking forward to Elaine & Marisa’s wedding at the wonderful Woodlands Park Hotel in Cobham, Surrey for a whole host of reasons – not least of all because it was the first same sex wedding I’d had the absolute honour and privilege to shoot.  With Christmas just around the corner, it promised to be a really festive day and I couldn’t wait to get shooting.

Woodlands Park Hotel Surrey Wedding Photography

Woodlands Park Hotel is a unique country house hotel set in 8 acres of beautiful Surrey countryside, yet is conveniently close to London.  Built in 1885 it is a Grade II listed Victorian Building and was one of the first buildings in England to have electric lighting.  It was also a favourite country retreat for the likes of Oscar Wilde and the Prince of Wales – so Elaine, Marisa and their wedding guests were definitely in some distinguished company.

As is tradition, Elaine and Marisa hadn’t seen one another on the morning of the wedding, and undertook their bridal preparations in separate rooms of the hotel.  Given my wedding photojournalism approach and desire to document their full and real wedding story, I was there for once the make-up (by Catherine Bailey) and hair was started – this part of the wedding day is great for capturing a mix of excitement and nerves.

Woodlands Park Hotel Surrey Wedding Photography

Both brides had opted for non-traditional dresses both from Having a Ball in Kingston, London and is fair to say they both looked fab.

The wedding ceremony, set in one the fabulous drawing rooms of the hotel and looking out onto the sculptured gardens, was a relaxed and refined affair – both ladies lovingly surrounded by family and friends, as they made their vows and lifelong promises to one another.  As with all weddings, there were laughs, smiles, the odd tear and, of course, kisses.  As a wedding photojournalist there were plenty of moments and emotions to capture.

Woodlands Park Hotel Surrey Wedding Photography

Once the guests had mingled with drinks, post ceremony, it was then in for the wedding breakfast after which the speeches began.  Marisa’s father delivered an emotional speech that reduced not just guests to tears, but also himself. It was clear he loved his daughter very much and was overcome with emotion of her spending the rest of her life with her soul mate Elaine.

Woodlands Park Hotel Surrey Wedding Photography

By contrast, Elaine’s son speech had everyone in tears of laughter and even caused his mother a few blushes.  However, there was no doubting the very special mother-son bond between him and Elaine, and he was genuinely happy his mother had found someone who in Marisa who, in turn, also made her very happy.

The evening proceeded with the fun of a photobooth and, of course, the evening reception full of dancing and laughs.

Woodlands Park Hotel Surrey Wedding Photography

I was really struck by the amount of smiles and laughter throughout Elaine and Marisa’s special day and it was clear there was a lot of love for them both.  It was a genuine honour to share their wedding day with them.

I hope you enjoy a small selection of photos from their day – it would be great (and help me out!) if you could share them on social media.

If you enjoy my storytelling approach to wedding photography and are getting married, then I’d love to chat with you about your wedding plans.  Please call me on +44 (0)7920 422144 or send me a message here.  I cover the whole of the UK and destination weddings abroad so will be delighted to hear from you no matter where you are.

Pre-Wedding Photography Surrey – Elaine and Marisa

Pre-Wedding

Elaine and Marisa’s Fun Festive Pre-Wedding Photo Shoot at the Pavilion Club in East Molesey

The great thing about a pre-wedding photography shoot is that not only do we all get to know one another a little better before your wedding day, but it can be whatever you want it to be. Some couples choose a romantic kind of shoot in a beautiful, others can go for something a little more fun and less formal.

So, being keen tennis players, Elaine and Marisa, a really fun and lovely same-sex couple, immediately knew they wanted to incorporate tennis into their pre-wedding photography.  So when the date I suggested coincided with their tennis club’s – the Pavilion Club in East Molesey, just down the road from the glorious Hampton Court Palace in Surrey – festive Christmas tennis tournament, they both jumped at the chance to have their pre-wedding photography shot during.

What I love about Elaine and Marisa is the fact they know what they want in a non-fussy, straightforward way. So they were definitely keen for me to incorporate my natural, candid and unobtrusive wedding photojournalism approach in shooting them at the tournament.  With everyone dressed up in festive fancy dress it really was a relaxed and informal shoot – and one that perfectly showed the fun side of them both, which I just love.  It’s great when you can incorporate a couple’s life and passions into a pre-wedding photography shoot, as it really reflects a part of their life and them, both as individuals and as a couple.

Of course, we did fit in a few portraits too afterwards – but on the whole it was a very candid and photojournalistic approach at a delightful tennis club in the depths of Surrey.

Here are a few selected images from their pre-wedding photography shoot. I can’t wait to get shooting their festive Christmas wedding photography at the Woodlands Park Hotel in Stoke D’abernon, Cobham in Surrey next week.

Are you getting married in Surrey or elsewhere and would love to incorporate a pre-wedding photography shoot into your wedding photography package?  Then please give me a call on +44 (0) 7920 422144 or send me a message via my contact page – I’d love to hear all about your wedding plans and discuss how my wedding photojournalism approach can deliver your real and unique wedding story.

Don’t Just Focus on Price for your Wedding Photography

Price, Wedding Advice

Why You Shouldn’t Just Consider the Cost of Wedding Photography

When it comes to booking your wedding photographer, it’s very easy to just look for the cheapest option available.  I know it’s a cliché but wedding photography really is one of those areas where you get what you pay for.  Of course, you will have a certain budget, and will want to work within that, but invariably if you allow cost to be your ONLY consideration when booking your wedding photographer you could end up making a disastrous decision.  You don’t have to look too deeply online to find wedding photography horror stories where a couple have simply gone for the cheapest wedding photographer they could find.

So here are my 5 top tips to also consider when booking a professional wedding photography, to ensure you make a properly thought through and considered choice when booking your wedding photographer.

1. Style of Wedding Photography

Don’t make the mistake of thinking there’s just one style and approach to wedding photography. Broadly speaking there are 3 approaches: traditional wedding photography, wedding photojournalism or commercial wedding photography.  Of course, within all these styles each individual wedding photographer will bring their own individual interpretation and personal style, but you need to know what kind of wedding photographer you would like and ensure that they match your artistic vision for your wedding day.

For example, I’m a wedding photojournalist who specialises in a more natural, candid and unobtrusive approach to documenting your wedding story, as opposed to a more traditional wedding photographer who will want to pose and stage events more. Understanding the differences in wedding photography will ensure you at least find the kind of wedding photographer whose work you admire.  After all, would you simply choose any old wedding dress because it’s cheap or have your wedding at a fast food outlet, simply because it was the cheapest option available?

2. Professional Wedding Photographer

It’s easy nowadays for anyone with a semi decent camera to call themselves a professional wedding photographer. Of course, we could have endless debates about the definition of “professional” but if you do want to book an experienced and professional wedding photographer you need to be looking at their portfolio or examples of their work. Do they have a variety of real weddings to show you? Or do they seem to have just one or two and some which look like faked weddings (i.e. just the bride and groom, no guests, etc.)?  Take a look at my wedding photography portfolios to enjoy some of the weddings I’ve documented.

The other thing to consider, when looking for a professional wedding photographer, is whether they belong to any professional bodies or not.  The other key here is to understand that some professional bodies anyone can join – simply by payment of a monthly fee and it’s not necessarily a comment on their professionalism.  What you need to be looking for are those professional bodies where the photographer has to qualify for entry into.  You then know that other professionals have deemed their work good enough and professional enough to belong to that body.  For example, my wedding photography portfolio had to pass scrutiny before I could qualify as a member of the Wedding Photojournalist Association.  Furthermore, I am also duty bound to work within their strict code of conduct.  It’s membership of professional bodies like this that will reassure you that your wedding photographer is both professional and competent enough to shoot your wedding.

3. Reducing the Risk of Anything Going Wrong on the Wedding Day

Wedding reportage captures the moment the bride adjusts her tiara, during the bridal preparations at the Premier Inn hotel in Crawley, Sussex.

It’s important to understand that you can never reduce risk from a wedding day 100%, but a competent wedding photographer will do as much as possible to reduce the risk of anything going wrong on the day itself.  They will invest in the best equipment possible, have back up equipment in the event of anything going wrong and, should the worst happen and something does go wrong, will have ample insurance cover for such scenarios.  This is often an area where the budget wedding photographers will cut corners to keep prices down.  They may only have one camera, just a couple of lenses and no insurance cover.  Of course, things may not go wrong but are you willing to take that kind of risk on what is one of the biggest days in your life and something that you’ll want to remember forever?

For example, I shoot with 3 camera bodies, have up to 7 prime lenses on the day, use only professional memory cards, back up each and every card to a professional storage device on the day and have full insurance cover which includes third party liability cover and professional indemnity cover.  I like to think this importantly gives you peace of mind on your big day.  But of course such continual investment in this area doesn’t come cheap so you do have to question what corners are being cut by a wedding photographer who seems to be offering unbelievably low prices.  Remember the old adage, if it seems too good to be true…it most probably is!

4. A Genuine Passion for Photography.

Your wedding day is, of course, going to be such an important and wonderful day for you. You’re going to be full of excitement, enthusiasm and passion for every little detail about it.  So you’ll want to surround yourself with wedding vendors who equally as passionate.  After all, would you really want a wedding photographer who’s not that passionate about what they do?

The trouble is there’s wedding photographers around who simply see wedding photography as a means to making money – they have no real passion either for weddings or, worse still, a genuine passion for photography itself.  But how can you tell if your wedding photographer is passionate about what they do? Well, look to see if they pursue photography in their spare time. Ask them who their inspirations and influences are.  Do they genuinely have a love for the history and traditions of photography? Do they value its art or craft. Or do they just view the camera as a money making machine?  This is important, as an appreciation of photography is what helps develops a photographer’s understanding of the art and their creative eye. And a photographer’s creative eye is really one of the main things you are paying for when you book a wedding photographer.

I could talk to you all day about my influences and inspirations – some of the great masters of the medium.  My bookshelves literally creak under the tomes of photography related books I own. Away from weddings I have a deep love of street photography – much of which also influences the way I document a wedding story.  It’s not just a job for me. It’s a way of life. It’s my passion.  Yes, I even dream of taking photos!

5. Get to Know Your Wedding Photographer

This really follows on from the last point, but don’t just go with the first wedding photographer who offers you the cheapest price. It’s important you get to know the photographer. Will you get on? Will they be good around your guests?  It’s the wedding photographer who you will spend most time around on your wedding day, so it’s important you pick a wedding photographer with whom you click. Does their approach to photographing your wedding match your own wish. Meet them and find out…before you book the first cheapest price that comes along!

So yes, of course, the cost of a wedding photographer is an important consideration – but I genuinely believe its important for you to make your final choice based on a number of factors and not just price alone. Equally, just because a wedding photographer charges a high price it doesn’t mean they are the right wedding photographer. But you do have to question how some wedding photographers can off their services so cheaply when, even as a hobby, photography is an expensive pursuit.
